MODIS Imagery Provides Superior Resolution for Fire Mapping

The figures below present an example of the use of MODIS imaery to map “hot spots” associated with wildfires. In this example the GOES imagery provides a mis-leading representation of the position and coverage of the burning region becasue of the large footprint, poor registration/navigation, and limited data precision. The higher resolution MODIS data more clearly identifies the region of interest.
