Considering the relative tranquility of the weather in the CONUS, I thought I would share some imagery from a significant impact event in Madagascar. Tropical Cyclone Giovanna made landfall near Andevoranto, Madagascar as a Category 3 TC (125-130 mph winds) around 2200 UTC on 02/13/12. The storm is blamed for approximately 10 deaths, but damage estimates are unavailable at this time.
As a “Satellite Champion” of GOES-R products, one of my tasks is to archive imagery for use in developing case studies or Weather Event Simulations (WES). The following images show Giovanna near maximum strength and just before landfall.
