Dust in the Chihuahuan Desert…

Another neat image from today…the MODIS RGB Dust product (Image 1) showed the dust plume that developed due to high winds off the Sierra Madre in the Chihuahuan Desert today.  The dust shows up as the large area of pink.  Notice the dust is much harder to see in the MODIS True Color product valid at the same time (Image 2).

By this time, the observation at El Paso, TX (KELP) indicated visibility at 1 sm due to blowing dust.  A little later, blowing dust began to affect Dell City with 3 sm visibility.  Winds in the area were gusting over 50 mph at times.
