AURBO on VIIRS Radiance Imagery

A fairly strong geomagnetic storm and clear skies allowed for decent Aurora viewing tonight which was also visible on VIIRS Day Night Band Radiance RGB Satellite products.

Here’s a CONUS view image from the NASA SPoRT page showing the Aurora extending across southern Canada. 20130629_0833_sport_viirs_conusa_dnbradrgb

Here’s the regional scale image captured from AWIPS.130629_AURBO_radiance

The geomagnetic storm actually peaked a couple hours earlier than the 833z satellite pass. Here is the POES Statistical Auroral Oval image from 0619Z, closer to the peak.pmapN

And the aurora forecast from the Space Wx Prediction Center. Aurora_Map_N
